State FFA Tractor Operators Event

General Plan:
  1. One individual per school/chapter may be entered as an official contestant. The contest will consist of three parts, each of which will be scored separately. Contestants will be permitted to use the tractor which they wish to operate from the tractors provided. Situations occurring that are not covered in the rules will be decided by the judges.
  2. The contestant with the lowest total seductions will be the winner.
PART I Written Test:
  1. The written test will include fifty (50) questions centered around the skill, and safe operation and operator maintenance of tractors.
  2. The test will include true-false, completion, and/or multiple choice questions.
PART II Tractor Inspection:

This part of the contest will include a careful inspection of the tractor by the contestant. He/she will write down and/or inform the judge personally of items detected while making their inspection. The judge will listen and observe the contestant and record their evaluation on Score Sheet No. 1 (attached). Score Sheet No. 1 indicates the items on which the contestants will be scored.

  1. The fuel check will be a visual check, opening and looking into the fuel tank, or looking at the gauge. The oil check will be made by observing oil level or sip stick. Water level will be checked by removing the radiator cap slowly and looking inside if tractor has not been started. Tires need not be checked by gauge, but by sight, unless tires appear to be low; then use gauge. Before starting engine, contestants must have gear shift level in neutral position, brakes locked and the throttle opened to starting position (1/4 - 2 open). Brakes will be checked by depressing the brake petal with the engine running and the tractor in gear; release clutch to determine brake adjustment.
  2. After engine has been running, the contestant must indicate by voice whether the oil pressure, ammeter, and temperature are/are not normal.

Observe at all times the starting line:

  1. Failure to set brakes when getting off tractor. Rough clutch engagement. Clashing of gears when shifting. Stalling of engine. Excessive engine speed. Excessive tractor speed. Standing up while tractor is in motion. Unsafe dismounting or mounting.
  2. Any unsafe conduct while on or around the tractor.
PART III Safe tractor operation:

Part III will include two vents which will test the skills and ability of the contestant to operate tractors safely.

Event No. 1 - Two Wheel Manure Spreader
  1. Score Sheet No. 2 will be used by the judge in evaluating the contestants performance. The contestant will drive to the starting line and follow the course outline by the judge. Time starts on the signal of the official at starting point and stops when contestant returns to this point. In spotting the tractor to the manure spreader the contestant must cone to a stop, set the brakes and put gear shift in neutral and then indicate that he/she is finished spotting. The contestant must place drawbar pin in the spreader hitch. The contestant will be allowed a maximum of ten (10) minutes for this event. If the Contestant does not finish the event in the ten minutes, he/she will be disqualified. Contestants will be disqualified if they dismount to observe clearance. The PTO shaft shall be hooked up if applicable. Failure will constitute an equipment foul. A spreader with a rear gate shall have the gate raised to enable the contestant to see the rear brakes. Failure to raise the hitch jack before moving the spreader shall constitute an equipment foul.
  2. Students operating equipment in a reckless or abusive manner will be disqualified immediately.
Event No. 2 - Four Wheel Trailer (Wagon, 1 Axle Steering)
  1. The contestant will follow the course outlined by the judge. No assistance will be allowed to hitch tractor to trailer. The trailer tongue will be on the ground. The contestant will make the hitch without moving the trailer forward more than one inch. The contestant will dismount form the tractor to insert the drawbar pin and remove it. Whenever dismounting form the tractor, both brakes must be set. Tractors with hand clutches will have the clutch disengaged, the gear shift level must be in neutral. The contestant will start from the official starting point on signal from the judge. Time will be stopped when he/she returns to this point. Score Sheet No. 3 will be used by the judge in evaluating the contestants performance. If the trailer is not in any part of the shed with in the allotted time of 10 minutes, the contestant will be disqualified. Contestants will be disqualified if they dismount to observe clearance. The PTO shaft shall be hooked up if applicable. Failure to do this will constitute an equipment foul.
  2. Contestants will receive a warning from the judge when he/she has two minutes left.
